No matter what your current nutritional program, these are nutrients you would want to take more of. The need for anti-oxidants in our diet is undeniable. There are researchers who believe that virtually all disease is caused by free radical damage, and anti-oxidants not only guard against such damage by neutralizing the free radicals, but in many cases they can reverse damage already incurred. By delivering these nutrients without using any additives, you are receiving high doses of the most commonly taken and most effective antioxidants in a completely uncompromised form.
The most commonly purchased single supplement in the country is 500 mg of Vitamin C. Our formula contains 500 mg of Calcium Ascorbate, a preferable form of Vitamin C. It is better retained than simple ascorbic acid and has none of its harshness because of the acid neutralizing properties of calcium. Further, there will be no net calcium loss in case some of the vitamin C is excreted, as can be the case with ascorbic acid. Because it is bound to calcium, our formula also has 53 mg of this important mineral.
The second most popular individual supplement is 400 IU’s of Vitamin E. Not only is ours all natural (d-rather than dl), but we use the most stable form, the succinate. It costs more to manufacture, but it holds its potency longer than the alcohol or acetate forms of vitamin E. 100 IU’s a day has been associated with a lowered risk of breast cancer, and 400 IU’s a day with a lower risk of heart disease. We use 400 IU’s.
The other anti-oxidant vitamin is Vitamin A, and we use the standard amount, 25,000 IU’s, in its nontoxic form, Beta Carotene. While it is possible to take too much vitamin A, that cannot happen with Beta Carotene because your body will not convert it to vitamin A beyond the body’s need.
SELENIUM is the anti-oxidant trace mineral, most often supplemented at the level of 200 mcg, as we have in our formula. We use its safest and most effective form, selenomethionine, the way it is most commonly found in food. There is research to indicate it may help prevent cancer, boost the immune system, protect against cardiovascular disease, detoxify some heavy metals, reduce inflammation, and even spur potency.
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is a very exciting new nutrient on the scene. For years it was thought its primary function was to recharge vitamins C and E after they had been used up, which it does. More recently it has been discovered that it is an anti-oxidant in its own right, and in fact is the universal anti-oxidant in that it is the only one that is both fat - and water - soluble. It also seems to help with carbohydrate metabolism, helps repair cellular membranes, and recently has been touted as an aid to removing wrinkles. We include 100 mg of this intriguing compound, a very healthy dose.
GRAPE SEED EXTRACT (GSE) and PINE BARK EXTRACT (PBE) are the two different forms to deliver PCO’s, proanthocyanidin oligomers, very powerful anti-oxidants that are part of the family of nutrients known as flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of plant pigments largely responsible for the colors we see in fruits and flowers that have been found to have many health properties. You may already be familiar with those from oranges called bioflavonoids. GSE is usually found at 92-95% concentration and we deliver it at 95%. PBE is commonly found at a 80-85% concentration, but we found a 90% form. There is a little bit of disagreement over which form is preferable. In the United States, PBE considerably outsells GSE whereas in Europe the reverse is true. PBE has certainly been more aggressively marketed here, but most of the research and patents have been done on the GSE form. Because we think that both are valuable, we include both at 100 mg, the standard dose for each.
CO-ENZYME Q10 (sometimes called Co-Q10) is another extremely powerful anti-oxidant that is found virtually everywhere throughout the body. It is often said there is nothing better you can do for your heart than take Co-Q10, and the research seems to bear that out. It also is a key part of the energy production cycle in the body, and looks like it enhances immunity. Because we seem to make less of it as we age, some researchers make the case that it should more properly be classified as a vitamin after a certain age. We include 30 mg of this very powerful nutrient.
